Governor’s Cup Run & Walk

Begun during Gov. Winter’s administration, this event is held annually in Jackson to promote recreational running and walking in a family-friendly atmosphere. Partners include the Office of the Governor, the MS Track Club, the American Association of Retired Persons and corporate sponsors. The 2007 Governor’s Cup 5K was held at Smith Park in downtown Jackson under the sponsorship of current Governor Haley Barbour.

Kids’ Only 1-Mile Fun Run

Promoted annually, this cross-country run/walk is offered free of charge to all children ages 12 and under to encourage physical activity in pre-teens while promoting healthy competition among elementary and middle-level schools. Currently in its seventh year, the event has grown each year, with more than 100 students participating in 2006. The 2007 Kids’ Mile was held in November in Clinton at the MC Choctaw Trails. Partners include the Office of the Governor and the MS Track Club.

Health Fairs and Conferences

The GCPFS participates in a number of health fairs, conferences and similar activities throughout the year and around the state to promote physical activity and good nutrition to ensure a healthy life for all Mississippians of all ages. Partners include representatives from both the business and educational communities as well as the MSDH, AARP and the Office of the Governor.

 

 
Health Fact

To promote and maintain health, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association writing group recommends that "all healthy adults aged 18 to 65 years need moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes on five days each week."
